在拿到1/3可利用的牌型时应当好好地算计一下：“此时翻牌是否能够提升了自己的牌力？”如果不是，立即弃牌。当然也有个别机会例外：
一、如果你的对手只有两个以内你的位置更占优势时，而且对手都已过牌, 你有时候理所当然地顺势下注，可以借此逼迫对手弃牌而借机取胜。
二、如果在翻牌圈只有1-2个对手，而且你在翻牌前是进攻方（指你以加注或再加注开牌而别人跟注），尽管翻牌未能帮助你，你还应当继续投注，给对手施加压力，直到遇到对手反击。继续投注的理由是尽管翻牌未帮上你，很可能也帮不了对手，而你的牌有可能仍是最大。
玩德州扑克游戏在大多数情况下，必须遵守弃牌原则：翻牌与你的底牌匹配就继续打，否则马上扔掉！输家总是在翻牌不匹配或只是稍有帮助的情况下仍继续看牌。
